Liberty Industrial was engaged by Glencore to carry out the demolition works of Ravensworth Underground Mine located in New South Wales. The site was managed by Xstrata Coal NSW and Glencore from February 2008, with operations suspended in mid-2014. The scope of works included the demolition, removal and disposal of all fixed plant and equipment above ground and in the underground mine. This involved the safe dismantling and disposal of conveyor sections, vent shaft infrastructure, all underground mine infrastructure and excavation of the 300 metre long reclaim tunnel.
Robust Solutions
- The dismantling of the conveyor sections expanding over the railway was scheduled during rail maintenance shutdown periods to minimise disruptions.
- A robust recycling and scrap management plan which encompassed diverse materials to achieve an impressive recycling rate.
Exceptional Outcomes
Liberty Industrial completed the closure of the Glencore Ravensworth underground mine, achieving an impressive recycling recovery rate of 96%. Over 10,500 tonnes of steel was dismantled and repurposed, diverting it from landfill to predominantly serve the mining sector, various manufacturing processes and heavy industry. Additionally, more than 10,000 tonnes of concrete found new life on site, contributing to the construction of a road. This achievement not only reinforced Liberty Industrial’s commitment to minimising waste on every project we undertake, but also fulfilled our goal of achieving a circular economy.
