Liberty Industrial Completes Award Winning Northern Producer Decommissioning Project and Delivers Exemplary Recycling Program

Kishorn, UK – Liberty Industrial is excited to announce its second UK decommissioning project for the Northern Producer has been completed, recycling 98% of materials from the retired asset, from steel to lifeboats, components and marine growth for local farmers.

The 11,200tonne floating production platform was decommissioned using world-class demolition methodologies and recycling techniques, underscoring Liberty Industrial’s commitment to circular economy principles while adhering to both local and international regulations. The recycling program aimed to promote an environment-first solution, minimum landfill with maximum recycling. Given the diversity in components of the asset the innovative approach included leveraging several local and international entities, and local community engagement.

“At Liberty Industrial, we aim not only to deliver the best environmental outcomes on every project but also to provide transparency for our clients to support their own sustainability goals. The recycling program aims to recirculate materials back into the supply chain. This project, the first major decommissioning project in this remote location, exemplifies our values and showcases our dedication to decommissioning leadership for the oil and gas industry.” Clinton Dick, Director, Liberty Industrial.

For marine waste, rather than disposing of it to landfill, Liberty Industrial partnered with Keenan Recycling to treat the waste to transform it into a natural fertiliser for reuse in local agriculture. After testing, regulatory approvals, and treatment processes, the resulting compost, enriched with essential nutrients, enhances soil diversity.

The final comprehensive recycling program included:

  • 11,200 tonnes of steel recycled,
  • Recycling of 5 Solar Turbines gas engines and 2 gearboxes for industrial reuse,
  • 42 tonnes of marine waste repurposed as fertiliser,
  • Sale of electrical instrumentation and controls equipment, for reuse globally,
  • Sale of 4 lifeboats by local buyers for recreational use,
  • Repurposing of the 4,500tonne rock blanket, used in protecting the dock floor, for future decommissioning projects,
  • Donation of marine artifacts to a heritage site,
  • Successful treatment and discharge of over 1,300 m³ of contained ballast water, via an,
  • Internal waste management program, where waste was split meticulously into various categories for management, processing and tracking.

Delivered in collaboration with Kishorn Port Ltd (KPL) and with the support of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency, (SEPA), the project was safely completed with no breaches of environmental parameters, and no incidents, spills or lost time incidents recorded.

Led by the exceptional in-house team at Liberty Industrial with both local and international experience, the following local and international leading entities were engaged to support with the execution:

  • Solar Turbines – Spare parts and components, via their repurposing plant in Eastern, Europe,
  • European Metal Recycling (EMR) – to transport the ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • 4D Controls – Spare parts and components, via their global online platform,
  • The local community – purchasing of lifeboats and miscellaneous items, and,
  • Keenan Recycling – Marine Growth, via their recycling plant in Aberdeenshire.

Jed Van Iersel, Decommissioning Manager at Liberty Industrial, commented This project demonstrates a determined and effective solution for the decontamination, deconstruction, and ethical disposal of oil & gas legacy assets. Our approach supports the energy transition by focusing on local decommissioning practices and recycling. Liberty Industrial’s commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, innovation, and collaboration sets a high standard for the industry.”

About the Northern Producer Decommissioning Project

In 2023, Liberty Industrial was engaged by Qualimar Shipping Limited/Northern Offshore UK Ltd (NOF) for the decontamination, deconstruction and disposal of the Northern Producer (NP) Floating Production Platform. The project adopted a first of its kind approach for such an asset, with decommissioning in a dry dock in a remote region.
