Modern Slavery

Modern Slavery is a crime and a violation of fundamental human rights. It takes various forms, such as slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour, and human trafficking, all of which have in common the deprivation of a person’s liberty by another to exploit them for personal or commercial gain.

Liberty Group Pty Ltd and all of our subsidiaries including Liberty Industrial are wholly supportive of abolishing Modern Slavery.

Policy Statement

To assess human rights risks across our business Liberty Industrial has engaged a top-tier operational and strategic risk-based approach.

We recognise the risk of legislative breaches and unethical or reputational risk when engaging suppliers and heightened risk exposures have been identified where external or indirectly engaged supply chains are not captured.

The company shall implement the following:

  • Liberty Industrial, and all our subsidiaries, will not tolerate the use of forced or child labour in any of its operations.
  • We do not tolerate the physical punishment, abuse or involuntary servitude of any worker.
  • We expect all members of our supply chain to uphold the same standards.
  • Should a member of our supply chain be involved in a breach of these policies, which comes to the attention of the company, we will cease all business activity with that company, effective immediately.
  • Liberty Industrial is committed to building and strengthening our existing policies and practices to eliminate human rights violations including modern slavery within our supply chain through our engagement processes.

Liberty Industrial makes our expectations towards our suppliers clear through our evaluation process, as directed by the policies and procedures set out in our accredited Business Management System.

The annual review of this system has been an effective communication tool to review and identify changes needed within the supplier engagement process and procurement procedures. Changes to these procedures have allowed the company to selectively engage suppliers who can provide transparency on their supply chains.

Liberty Industrial will continue to audit and assess the risk periodically and make changes when necessary. Liberty Industrial aims to provide additional training for employees responsible for managing suppliers on our human rights obligations. We will continue to set clear expectations and communicate and educate workers on modern slavery, to build a progressive organisational culture of respect. All companies the company deals with are required to confirm both they and their supply chain are not knowingly involved in slavery and human trafficking. Such a declaration is required by all companies to be added to the company’s preferred supplier list in each branch respectively and includes:

  • The company will always conduct a check on all potential employees before employment to verify their right to work;
  • The company undertakes a rigorous check of the documents of potential employees to verify their permanent right to work within the Country before employment;
  • Further those potential employees with only a temporary right to work, the company undertakes additional checks to verify their immigration status/permission before the expiry of the same to ensure their documents have been renewed before employment;
  • This verification also includes checking to verify the potential employee is not subject to any form of immigration restriction which would prevent them from undertaking the work in question.
