Mining and Resources

Liberty Industrial helps deliver some of the largest and most complex mining closure projects, including the largest demolition project underway in the Southern Hemisphere. Leveraging our in-house expertise, owned fleet, proprietary demolition software, and proven track record we safely deliver end-to-end, world-class demolition, recycling and waste management for the biggest mining companies in Australia.

The CSIRO predicts the closure of almost 240 Australian mines by 2040 and estimates an annual expenditure ranging from $4–8 billion on mine rehabilitation and closure. Mine closure often includes not only the safe removal and disposal of all infrastructure and assets, but also a detailed and considered planning to address local community and environmental impacts.

Due to the scale and remote location, mine closure is a complex and multifaceted process, requiring multiple stages over several years. Planning is often initiated before closure and benefits from Early Contractor Involvement and local community engagement to allocate sufficient time and financial provision for effective closure and decommissioning.

With a proven track record handling the largest and most complex mining closure projects in Australia, Liberty Industrial delivers comprehensive solutions for long-term plant closures. Our integrated service offering prioritises local engagement through our Healing Country Framework, innovation in our methodologies and approach, leading safety standards, risk mitigation, and best in class sustainability, all while providing accelerated delivery schedules and cost savings.

With direct experience in managing multi-year closure projects, we have successfully handled some of the most significant mining infrastructure deconstruction projects, including stage one of the Argle Diamond Mine Closure project. The largest deconstruction project in the southern hemisphere, is currently underway in Gove, NT.

Innovation in Demolition

Strategically designed demolition methodologies ensure we can manage the risks associated with complex demolition events. Liberty Industrial has extensive experience with a broad range of demolition methods, applied in consideration of the lowest risk and best safety outcomes possible. These methods include:

  • High reach.
  • Mechanical.
  • Induced collapse.
  • Explosive.
  • Cut & Pull.
  • Cut & Lift.

Explosive Demolition

Liberty Industrial are a leading explosive demolition contractor with a proven track record demolishing large-scale, heavy industrial structures including power station boiler structures and the Omega Tower, the tallest structure to be demolished in the Southern Hemisphere, standing at 432 meters tall.

Our strategically designed demolition methodologies are designed and vetted by our highly qualified and vastly experienced explosives and structural engineers, who work closely with licensed shot firers, project managers and key stakeholders to carefully engineer and precisely execute the safe demolition of these structures. These include:

  • Risk management workshops.
  • Explosive management plans.
  • Blast day plans.
  • Detailed engineering analysis and third-party review including 3D modelling.
  • Detailed pre-weakening work method statements.
  • Estimates on expected ground vibration & air blast overpressure.
  • Blast day environmental monitoring plans.
  • Stakeholder management plans.
  • Liasing with regulators for required approvals.
  • Proprietary ASI modelling software for blast preparation planning.

Safety

Safety is integral to every project, and proactively reducing risk is central in our commitment to develop world-class standards. At Liberty Industrial, we employ innovative risk reduction methodologies, supported by a proven track record of excellence in safety. Our approach includes:

  • Award-winning HSEQ teams, recognised for industry-leading performance and standards.
  • Development of robust risk mitigation and critical control strategies, involving detailed workshops with clients and team members to identify and manage risks before commencing work.
  • A State-of-the-art fleet of high reach equipment, reducing the need for induced collapse and explosive demolition where possible.
  • Robust training development programs, including the in-house development of the most advanced oxy cutting training package in Australia and the integration of Volvo 5.0 simulation technology, which mimics highly realistic machine operations in complex demolition, civil and remediation environments.
  • Use of Applied Science (ASI) software for precise blowdowns, including digital asset modelling and predictive 3D failure mode analysis to minimise risk and ensure safe explosive demolition.
  • The latest HAZMAT protective gear as guided by certified Occupational Hygienists.
  • Strategic methodologies to reduce personnel on the work-front and ground works.

Responsive Remediation

Liberty Industrial provides innovative, sustainable and cost-effective remediation solutions addressing land, groundwater and marine environmental impacts. Our comprehensive approach ensures that mined land is safe, stable, non-polluting and able to support post-mining desired land use, while ensuring that contaminated materials for treated for safe processing.

  • Management and removal of NORM, mercury, LSA, PFAS, asbestos and other hazardous materials.
  • Contaminated land remediation.
  • Site rehabilitation.
  • Groundwater & wastewater treatment through Liberty Industrial’s in-house water treatment plants.
  • Industrial cleaning of contaminated structures prior to demolition.
  • Emergency response.

Our Commitment to the Circular Economy and Environmental Stewardship

Due to the remote nature of many mining sites, it’s common that these sites are located on or near natural heritage sites. The responsibility of returning a site as close to near natural state is one we take with great care. We adopt a resourceful and innovative approach to prioritising responsible and sustainable waste management and best in class remediation and rehabilitation standards. Our commitment to exemplary environmental compliance and stewardship drives us to maximise recycling and minimise landfill on every project. As a result, we regularly achieve impressive recycling rates of 95-98%.

 This includes:

  • Analysis for waste recycling opportunities and planning.
  • Scrap metal processing and recycling.
  • Optimisation of scrap value rebates through direct shipping and export.
  • Precious metal segregation and salvage.
  • On-site crushing for reuse.
  • Reuse of recycled materials for engineered remediation solutions or rehabilitation.
  • Precious mineral segregation and salvage.
  • Remediation including bioremediation and hazardous material removal.
  • Rehabilitation.

Leaving a Positive Legacy for Indigenous Communities

With mining sites located near Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities and sacred sites, Liberty Industrial’s focus is to foster a shared prosperity with those communities, whereby we leave long lasting social, economic and environmental benefits long after closure. We achieve this through early and continuous engagement, leader-to-leader, prior to tendering for work. In turn, providing us with the opportunity to curate meaningful partnerships, identify opportunities for Traditional Owner Businesses to contribute to project delivery and offer traineeships to Indigenous individuals.

Environmentally, our goal is to restore the land as closely as possible to its natural state. By focusing on responsible mineral residue management and land rehabilitation, we achieve an environment that can be utilised for pre-mining land use.
