McDermott engaged Liberty Industrial for the deconstruction and recycling of the 1066t Campbell platform. After six months of meticulous planning between inhouse engineers, McDermott, the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson, and other key stakeholders, Liberty Industrial received the platforms three structures via cargo barge. Using Roll-On-Roll-Off procedures and Self-Propelled Module Transporters, the structures were moved to a dedicated demolition yard within AMC for subsequent dismantling and recycling.
Robust Solutions
- A six-month meticulous planning period was undertaken to execute the Roll-On-Roll-Off procedure, using bespoke handling and mooring systems to move three unique substructures and mitigate safety risks.
- Exceptional stakeholder management, including regular consultations and proactive engagement to establish a centre of excellence. This approach navigated logistical challenges of operating in a busy port environment, such as AMC Henderson, while addressing weather disruptions.
- Proactive risk mitigation strategies were implemented to prevent project delays and cost overruns. This included renegotiating standby rates and adjusting equipment hire dates to ensure the safe execution of work within the revised schedule.
Exceptional Outcomes
- This is the first roll on and off of a platform for decommissioning at this facility and also in the Australian region as historically platforms were fabricated in Southeast Asia prior to delivery, but not usually deconstructed at Port facilities in Australia. This was driven by changes in legislation requiring no potentially hazardous waste be exported, requiring deconstruction of these types of structures onshore in Australia to remove any hazardous waste at that stage.
- An incredible recycling rate of 98% was achieved, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability by eliminating waste through a circular economy approach.
- Completing deconstruction and disposal activities in a common user facility surrounded by other stakeholders.
- The project was completed with no safety incidents, on schedule and with high stakeholder satisfaction.
