Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri was committed to completing the demolition, remediation and divestment of its smelter and the surrounding land owned by Hydro Aluminium in a manner that conformed to relevant regulatory and legislative requirements. On behalf of Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri, the McCloy Group commissioned Liberty Industrial to undertake the demolition and remediation work at the Switchyard.
Robust solutions
Liberty Industrial proposed bioremediation to treat the hydrocarbon impacted soils on site. This process involved excavating the soils and placing them into an engineered bio-pile. Following the addition of nutrients and other amendments, the bio-pile was monitored for moisture and soil oxygen content via telemetry, to inform aeration requirements and ensure optimal treatment conditions. The use of this method significantly reduced the cost for the client.
Exceptional outcomes
- Upwards of 98% of all material was either recycled or repurposed.
- 22,000t of concrete was processed, with crushed fragments repurposed on-site as backfill material.
- 4,000t of soil was excavated for reuse. The project was completed to schedule and to client and stakeholder expectations.
