The Department of Defence commissioned Liberty Industrial to demolish its redundant 432m high Omega Transmission Tower – the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere at the time.
Robust solutions
- Liberty Industrial underwent meticulous planning and consultation with State and Federal Government health and safety agencies, Comcare and WorkSafe Victoria.
- Preparation of a comprehensive and detailed Blast Management Plan, Explosives Security Plan and Demolition Work Plan with step-by- step, detailed methodology. This ensured the implosion was precisely executed and the structure safely grounded in a matter of seconds, reacting as planned and anticipated.
- The tower was demolished with controlled explosives in combination with oxy cutting techniques. Extensive testing of a unique combination of explosives that were locally sourced was conducted.
- The cutting charges successfully severed the plates, releasing the guy cables and causing the tower to destabilise and collapse upon itself in four large sections.
- Provision of state-of-the-art equipment to downsize and process scrap metal and waste.
- Removal of 100mm of topsoil to ensure the site was free of any lead-based paint contaminants that may have been released from the structure’s coating with the impact of the collapse. The team conducted soil tests to certify the area was free of any lead paint contamination before demobilisation.
Exceptional outcomes
- The project was masterfully executed and completed on budget, to schedule and without incident.
- The team recovered more than 700t of ferrous metal and 37t of non-ferrous metal, which accounted for 97% of all waste material.
- Liberty Industrial was awarded Winner in the Explosive Demolition Award category at the 2015 World Demolition Awards.
