The structural integrity of the submerged wharf elements was largely unknown, and poor underwater visibility further hindered assessment and planning efforts. To manage these conditions, Liberty Industrial employed subsea remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and daily 3D sonar imaging to map and monitor the submerged structures in real time. These technologies were instrumental in dismantling the submerged wharf components in a controlled and efficient manner and were a key enabler for the entire project group to safely complete the project.
Darwin, Australia – Liberty Industrial has successfully completed the demolition of cyclone-damaged infrastructure at Milner Bay Wharf on Groote Eylandt, overcoming challenges through rapid response and innovative marine-based solutions.
Engaged by McConnell Dowell, the project was initiated following significant damage sustained during the severe 2023–24 cyclone season.
Liberty Industrial was tasked with mobilising quickly to a remote island location, navigating complex logistics and strict environmental regulations to remove structurally compromised wharf sections and clear the way for reconstruction. Liberty Industrial’s team immediately deployed personnel, equipment, and resources to Groote Eylandt, demonstrating the company’s ability to respond swiftly to critical client project needs.

Operating in an isolated marine environment presented added complexity.

Environmental considerations were a key component of the project.
The removal of hazardous materials—including 6 tonnes of asbestos-containing material—ensured all works were completed safely with minimal environmental impact.
Despite the demanding site conditions and the urgency imposed by the cyclone damage, the project was completed on schedule. The safe and timely delivery of this project highlights Liberty Industrial’s capacity to rapidly respond to client critical projects, and reinforces its position as a leader in complex, environmentally sensitive works.
“This project is a testament to the agility and technical strength of our team,” said Mathew Clenton, Project Manager. “Our ability to mobilise immediately and apply engineered solutions in such a remote and challenging environment ensured the safe removal of damaged infrastructure, and enabled our client to proceed with reconstruction works without delay.
The Groote Eylandt Wharf Demolition Project showcases Liberty Industrial’s growing capabilities in large-scale marine demolition and its commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility.
