Asbestos

At Liberty Industrial, we specialise in asbestos removal and disposal. By combining industry-leading asbestos management practices with advanced risk controls, we ensure safe, incident-free operations on every project.

We help businesses identify and understand their asbestos risk profile and best outcome management plans through thorough analysis and expert advice.

Through our refined innovative processes, we create a secure work environment, minimising risk and handling asbestos-containing materials with the utmost care and compliance.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. Due to its durable, versatile and heat-resistant properties, asbestos was widely used in industrial, commercial and construction applications before the 1980s.  Asbestos has been linked to severe illnesses and must be safely and expertly removed and disposed of to remove any associated risks.

Most industrial assets that require demolition, feature older structures where asbestos is likely to be present, meticulous asbestos management must be identified and executed.

There are two forms of asbestos:

Non-friable (bonded): Asbestos that is mixed with cement or other bonding materials. Asbestos in this form, and in good condition, is likely to be a low risk to health.

Friable: Asbestos that can be crumbled, pulverised, or turned into a powder by hand can be a health risk if it becomes airborne.

Most of the asbestos used in these industrial assets can be friable asbestos which, when disturbed, is considered a Hazardous Material critical risk. To avoid this risk, our Asbestos removal teams are accompanied by our accredited occupational Hygienists, leading the way for a thorough, safe removal process.

Liberty Industrial’s Approach to Asbestos Remediation

Liberty Industrial has a dedicated team of experts with proven experience in the safe removal of asbestos from heavy industrial sites.

By combining best practice asbestos management procedures, and advanced hazard and risk controls to maintain safe, incident-free operations, Liberty Industrial ensures asbestos-containing materials are removed and transported for disposal safely

Before Liberty Industrial can demolish any structures on a project, a detailed asbestos audit is required to be undertaken. To ensure a safe work environment, Liberty Industrial has implemented refined critical risk processes and hazard management practices that control all hazards and risks associated with asbestos removal, resulting in low-risk activity.

Our risk mitigation strategies begin well before work commences. At the Tender stage, we provide preliminary risk assessments, which serve as a foundation for our Demolition Risk Assessment Workshop (DRAW) combined with live documentation practices to make real-time updates, keeping all parties aligned on site conditions and requirements.

Asbestos in Soil

Asbestos removal from soil is a specialised process as asbestos fibres can contaminate soil through various means, such as improper disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), erosion of asbestos-containing products, or historical industrial activities.

Key considerations in managing asbestos in soil include; the form of asbestos-containing material and its potential to release airborne fibers, the extent and depth of contamination, and whether it is surface-level, or buried. Additionally, the current and future land uses, proximity to receptors, and necessary controls based on location play significant roles in assessing risk.

Management of Asbestos in soil may be mitigated via various methodologies:

  • Spreading, picking and removal of visible bonded materials to enable validation and reuse of impacted soils.
  • Innovative waste picking lines and screening operations for bonded fragment removal.
  • Design and construction of bespoke encapsulation cells and undertaking the subsequent tracked relocation and capping of impacted soils on-site in designated cell areas.

Innovation in safe asbestos removal

Due to the remote nature of the sites we decommission, Liberty Industrial has developed innovative solutions to dealing with Asbestos in extreme weather environments.

Examples of this include:

  • Prevention of heat stress incidents in tropical environments by installing scaffolding connected to air conditioners inside asbestos encapsulations for removal teams, reaching as high as 7 stories.
  • The review of our Heat Stress Procedure to include a standardised hydration testing regime, with enhanced guidance on heat injury management and first aid, the introduction of an Asbestos Hydration Management Sheet, and targeted training to prevent heat illness among workers in tropical conditions.

PPE and Safety

Our expert teams are protected by the latest HAZMAT protective equipment under the guidance of certified Occupational Hygienists and by working closely with local authorities/agencies to secure a contaminated site to maintain public safety standards until the area is certified as clear of contaminated waste and safe for public access.

When combined with our comprehensive risk mitigation procedures, pre-tender and live on project, this approach ensures that all team members follow strict PPE safety requirements and site security protocols to maintain a safe working environment for everyone.

Safety

Liberty Industrial adheres to the comprehensive understanding of the regulatory requirements to remediate contaminated sites. We hold the necessary insurances and licences to undertake all facets of excavation, handling, and management of asbestos-impacted material legally and safely, both bonded and friable, including asbestos products, construction, and demolition (C&D) wastes, and contaminated soils.

Additionally, we have strong relationships and user agreements in place with a national network of waste solution providers, ensuring we offer highly competitive options for excavation and disposal of asbestos impacted soil and waste material.
