World’s Most Powerful Shear Unveiled in Australia

New Shear Core Fortress FS-245R designed in collaboration with Liberty Industrial Set to Improve Safety and Efficiency at the Gove Refinery Demolition Project.

NHULUNBUY, Australia —  Liberty Industrial has unveiled the monstrous Fortress FS245R shear at Australia’s largest demolition project, in Gove, NT. Three years in the making, Liberty Industrial challenged its manufacturing partner ShearCore, to design a shear that is more powerful than anything on the market, but light enough to be mounted at 20m pin height on its fleet of 200t high reach excavators. This revolutionary shear is set to reduce risk and improve efficiency in Liberty Industrial’s demolition operations at the in Australia.

The result is astounding. Delivering more piercing force than any shear on the market at a lighter weight, the shear, mounted at 20m pin height on one of Liberty’s 200t high reach excavators reduces the risk profile by allowing operators to mechanically demolish large heavy steel structures that would otherwise require high risk induce collapse methods or large cranes to dismantle. At ground level it reduces the need for hand processing of thick steel plate and heavy beams and columns. The FS245R plays a pivotal role in removing personnel from the work front, maximising mechanical methods, and ultimately making the demolition environment safer.

The new shear was designed by leading experts at ShearCore in a collaborative process with Liberty Industrial. A true team effort, from the day ShearCore accepted the challenge to build the FS245R the design has been the result of combined efforts from in-house experts in engineering, design, manufacturing, and practical long-term project experience.

“We wanted to deliver a solution that would increase efficiency and reduce risk across our portfolio of global closure projects. This shear enables us to significantly reduce the potential exposure times of our personnel while also improving overall efficiency in demolition and scrap processing. The new ShearCore attachment complements our bespoke demolition fleet, allowing us to tackle the complex heavy industrial structures found at Gove and take on any future projects across the mining, energy, oil and gas, and defence industries,” said Simon Gill, Director of Liberty Industrial.

The goal: Build the worlds most powerful shear – that’s light enough to mount at 20m pin height on a 200t High Reach.

“Having been ShearCore’s very first Australian customer back in 2018, we operate a fleet of some 20 Fortress Shears around Australia, which includes the entire range of shears Fortress manufacture. Having worked closely with the ShearCore team since 2018, Liberty Industrial was keen to collaborate with their in-house experts for this challenging project, given the success to date we had with the Fortress shears and the willingness to embrace the ideas and innovations Liberty had for the FS245R. We knew ShearCore would be the perfect partner to transform our concept into reality, and that the resulting shear would complement our existing fleet, which is being deployed at the largest ongoing demolition project in the Southern Hemisphere.” said Simon.

“Customers like Liberty Industrial continue to teach us how our product can be better. We listen and continue to strengthen the design and finished product. Previously, the largest Fortress mobile shears that Liberty owned was two 13 tonne FS-145R. Simon Gill told us that the FS-145 is one of the best and challenged us to make one larger than ever. The demands were high, but with continued encouragement from Liberty Industrial we proudly designed and manufactured the FS-245R model and are proud to have accomplished this for one of our best customers.” explained Ian Lewandowski, Director – Global Accounts Scrap/Demolition, ShearCore.

The Shear is a strong addition to the existing Fortress shears in the Liberty Industrial portfolio, 12 of which are being ultilised on site at the. The entire range of ShearCore shears are currently in use on Liberty Industrial projects around Australia.

About the ShearCore Fortress FS-245R

ShearCore designs and manufactures Fortress mobile shears in Superior, Wisconsin, USA.

The new second-generation Fortress FS-245R mobile shears are more powerful and better built than any other mobile shear in the world. Weighing in at 23 tonnes, the FS-245R weighs up to 3 tonnes less than equivalent counterparts, delivering the best strength to weight ratio currently in the market.

The Fortress FS-245R can cut heavy infrastructure steel in an average of 1 cut, compared to 3 cuts with previous ShearCore. The new FS-245R shears deliver more value in both its ability to complete the tasks efficiently and safely, while also reducing the environmental impact in transport requirements for heavier and older generation shears.
